Driven to innovate through research and community collaboration.

How I approach design problems and data visualisation

Design Philosophy

I place the user at the forefront of the design process, with the core belief that design should revolve around the needs of the users.

  •  I gained insight into their goals, challenges and emotions

  • I gathered feedback from a variety of users

My approach is rooted in user-centred design principles such as:

  • Creating personas and user journeys to empathise with the target audience.

  • Conducting usability testing and user feedback sessions to iterate on designs.

  • Ensuring that design decisions are driven by user needs and preferences.

My design philosophy is firmly rooted in user-centred design principles and the paramount importance of clear communication. I believe that effective design starts with a deep understanding of user needs and a commitment to crafting experiences that resonate with and empower users.

Understanding the Problem

To tackle design challenges, my initial steps involve conducting extensive research to gain insights into user needs, pain points, and behaviours. I collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define the problem's scope and objectives, ensuring alignment with overarching goals. Identifying constraints and limitations early in the process allows me to navigate potential hurdles proactively.

Defining Goals and Objectives

Setting clear and measurable goals is a cornerstone of my design approach. I define success criteria for each project, establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) that enable me to track progress and effectiveness throughout the design journey.

Ideation and Brainstorming

I foster a culture of creativity and open communication within my teams. Brainstorming sessions are a regular part of my process, where colleagues and I explore a multitude of solutions. Visualising design concepts through sketching and wireframing helps us refine and articulate potential directions.

Content Strategy

My approach to content strategy is twofold. Firstly, I develop content that is concise, clear, and aligned with the brand's voice and tone. Secondly, I work collaboratively with designers and developers to seamlessly integrate content into the user interface. Content isn't just text; it's a vital design component that enhances both aesthetics and usability.

Testing and Iteration

Rigorous testing and iteration are integral to my design process. I employ methods such as user testing to validate design choices. Analysing data and user feedback guides informed design adjustments, ensuring that our solutions are data-driven and user-centric.

Collaboration and Communication

I excel in cross-functional collaboration, effectively communicating design decisions and rationale to diverse teams. Overcoming challenges and differences of opinion during the design process is an area where I thrive, fostering productive discussions that lead to optimal outcomes.

Results and Impact

I take pride in delivering results. Specific examples from successful design projects in my portfolio demonstrate how my approach has led to positive outcomes. I rely on metrics and data to quantify the impact of my work, showcasing the tangible benefits of user-centric design.

Continuous Learning

My commitment to continuous learning is unwavering. I actively seek opportunities for professional growth, including relevant training, courses, and certifications. Staying updated in the ever-evolving field of UX design ensures that I bring the latest insights and best practices to each project.

Task Analysis

Task analysis is a crucial aspect of UX research, helping to address user problems effectively. It involves observing and recording how users solve problems, achieve their goals, and complete tasks with specific tools and sequences. To conduct a task analysis, researchers need to collect five types of data: trigger, desired outcome, base knowledge, required knowledge, and artifacts.

To perform a task analysis, follow these steps:

Identify the Task: Choose a persona and scenario for user research, focusing on the user's goal and motivation.

Break Down the Goal:

Divide the goal into 4-8 manageable subtasks to avoid making it too broad.
Create Task Diagrams:

Use any notation to create layered task diagrams for each subtask, including a narrative that explains the "whys."
Validation:

Review the analysis with someone knowledgeable about the tasks but not involved in the breakdown process.

It's also recommended to conduct parallel task analyses with multiple individuals to compare and merge outputs for a comprehensive final deliverable. Task analysis helps uncover user insights critical for designing user-friendly experiences.

Data Visualisation

I showcase my expertise in data visualisation using Tableau, a versatile and powerful tool that transforms raw data into interactive and informative visuals. My steps typically involve several key steps. I connect to various data sources, which can range from databases to Excel files and web data connectors. Data preparation is the next critical step, where I meticulously clean and transform data to ensure it's suitable for visualisation. This may involve filtering, sorting, aggregating, and other data manipulation techniques. Once the data is ready, I create a new worksheet and carefully select the most appropriate visualisation type based on the nature of the data. In the construction of the visualisation itself, I define the structure and then invest time in customising the visualisation, focusing on formatting elements like marks, labels, colours, and sizes.

For comprehensive insights, I optionally create dashboards by combining multiple visualisations, offering users a seamless and interactive data story experience. I incorporate storytelling, guiding viewers through a sequence of sheets and visualisations to provide a narrative context for the data, making it more engaging and informative.

In summary, my portfolio highlights my proficiency in creating impactful data visualisations with Tableau, emphasising the importance of not only crafting visually appealing charts but also ensuring they convey meaningful insights to the target audience.

I am dedicated to practising and experimenting with Tableau, continuously refining my skills and knowledge to deliver data-driven visualisations that empower informative decision-making.
